India and Ethiopia are natural partners in regional peace and connectivity: PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday described India and Ethiopia as “natural partners” in promoting regional peace, security and connectivity, while addressing a joint session of the Ethiopian Parliament during his maiden bilateral visit to the African nation.

Speaking in Addis Ababa, PM Modi highlighted the strategic geography of both countries, noting that Ethiopia sits at the crossroads of Africa while India lies at the heart of the Indian Ocean region. This shared positioning, he said, creates a strong foundation for cooperation on regional stability and connectivity.

“As developing nations, India and Ethiopia have much to learn from each other and much to offer one another,” the prime minister said, adding that the two countries also share warmth not only in climate, but in spirit.

Modi’s address marked the 18th national parliament he has spoken to worldwide. His remarks were met with a standing ovation from Ethiopian lawmakers at the conclusion of the speech.

During the visit, India and Ethiopia elevated their bilateral relationship to a Strategic Partnership, a move described as a landmark outcome of the trip. PM Modi was also conferred Ethiopia’s highest national honour by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali.

The Ethiopia stop forms part of PM Modi’s four-day, three-nation tour. He arrived from Jordan on December 16 and is scheduled to depart for Oman, the final leg of his diplomatic visit.
