Message from the Minister of Health on World Suicide Prevention Day

On World Suicide Prevention Day, we renew our commitment to preventing suicide, to supporting people who may be struggling, and to creating spaces for open, compassionate conversations that can help save lives.

Every person deserves to know that they matter, that they are valued, and that support is available. The 9-8-8: Suicide Crisis Helpline provides a safe, bilingual, trauma-informed and culturally sensitive space for anyone seeking support for themselves or for someone they know. Since launching in November 2023, trained 9-8-8 responders have answered more than one million calls and text messages.

Earlier this year, I announced renewed support of up to $120.2 million over the next two years for the continued operations of 9-8-8. This investment reflects our ongoing commitment to ensure that people across Canada have access to suicide prevention support when they need it the most.

Research also plays an important role in strengthening suicide prevention in Canada. Through the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, the Government of Canada is supporting research that helps understand suicide and suicidal behaviours, identify effective approaches for prevention and intervention, and improve supports for people and communities affected by suicide. This work will create effective, evidence-based approaches that are responsive to the diverse needs and experiences of people across Canada.

We also continue our work with provinces, territories, Indigenous partners, organizations, and people with lived and living experience to advance the goals of the National Suicide Prevention Action Plan and strengthen suicide prevention efforts for those communities most impacted across the country.

By speaking openly, listening without judgment, and encouraging people to seek help, we can reduce stigma and create communities where everyone feels supported, understood, and valued.

Together, we can work toward a future where everyone knows that help is available, hope is possible, and no one is alone.

The Honourable Marjorie Michel, P.C., M.P.
