Ontario unveils multibillion-dollar plan to boost tourism and attractions in Niagara

The Ontario government has announced a new multibillion-dollar tourism strategy aimed at bringing major new attractions and expanded services to the Niagara region, with the goal of driving economic growth and increasing visitor numbers. Premier Doug Ford made the announcement Monday in Niagara Falls, joined by Niagara West MPP Sam Oosterhoff, Transportation and Tourism Ministers Prabmeet Singh Sarkaria and Stan Cho, and several municipal leaders from across the region, including Niagara Falls Mayor Jim Diodati. “This is more than just tourism — it’s economic growth, job creation, investment and prosperity,” Ford said, adding that the plan is designed to “unlock the region’s full potential.”

According to the province, the strategy is built around five key pillars: attractions, transportation, gaming, wine and restaurants, and arts and culture. Potential projects include a new theme park, along with a series of redevelopment and revitalization initiatives across the region. The government says the plan aims to attract 25 million visitors annually and double Niagara’s tourism impact, generating an additional $3 billion in Ontario’s GDP each year.

The announcement follows the closure of Marineland earlier this year, a longtime Niagara Falls attraction that is now seeking new homes for its animals, including its remaining beluga whales. Some residents have called for the site to be redeveloped into a new amusement park without animals. As part of the strategy, Ontario plans to expand the Queen Elizabeth Way in Niagara, increase GO Transit service to the region, and improve air access. Ford said the Niagara District Airport will be revitalized to accommodate more flights and larger aircraft.

“Together, we’re going to build a place that welcomes families from across our province and across the world,” Ford said. The province also confirmed that a new hotel project at the former Toronto Power Generating Station is moving ahead. In addition, Ontario is working with Niagara Parks to explore private-sector partnerships for projects such as a new observation wheel, redevelopment of the Ontario Power Generating Station into a new visitor experience, and the transformation of the Niagara Parks marina into a recreation destination. Mayor Jim Diodati welcomed the announcement, saying the strategy would benefit communities throughout the region. “The rising tide will raise all boats,” he said.
