Poilievre Calls For Fuel Tax Holiday As Gas Prices Surge

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre is calling on the federal government to implement a temporary tax break on fuel as gas prices rise across Canada.

Poilievre announced that he will outline a proposal to pause federal taxes on gasoline and diesel, including both the GST and excise tax, for the remainder of 2026.

The proposal comes amid a sharp increase in global fuel prices, driven in part by escalating conflict in the Middle East, which has disrupted energy markets and pushed costs higher worldwide.

Poilievre is expected to present the plan during a news conference in Ottawa, positioning the measure as immediate relief for Canadians facing rising costs at the pump.

Several countries, including Australia and Ireland, have already introduced similar tax reductions to cushion the impact of high fuel prices.

This is not the first time the Conservative leader has advocated for such a measure. He previously called for a fuel tax holiday in 2024 during another period of elevated gas prices.

The proposal is likely to intensify political debate around affordability, taxation, and the federal government’s response to global economic pressures.
