Richmond hill approves 2026 budget with 3.46 per cent property tax increase

Richmond Hill council has officially adopted its 2026 municipal budget, approving a 3.46 per cent increase to the city’s property tax rate.

The hike will translate to an additional $6.29 per month for the owner of an average detached home, according to the city. Council passed the budget on Dec. 10, with no unexpected changes and no public opposition to the figures first presented in draft form last month.

Mayor David West said the budget reflects the city’s focus on responsible financial management while maintaining service levels residents depend on.

“It is our commitment to fiscal prudence, sound investment and continuous improvement, and also our pledge to continue delivering high-quality services that the people of Richmond Hill rely on every day,” West said in a statement.

The operating portion of the budget includes a 1.96 per cent increase, along with a 1.5 per cent capital asset sustainability levy. The city’s 2026 capital budget totals $121.1 million, a significant increase from $89 million in 2025, and will support at least 152 infrastructure and improvement projects.

Of every residential property tax dollar collected, Richmond Hill retains 28 per cent, while 52 per cent is allocated to York Region for services such as policing, and 20 per cent goes to local school boards.

Additional information on the 2026 budget, including a detailed breakdown and an explanatory video, is available on the city’s website.
