Trump critic George Conway moves toward congressional run in open New York City seat

George Conway, a former conservative attorney turned vocal critic of President Donald Trump, has taken formal steps toward running for Congress in an open New York City district.

Conway filed paperwork this week to run as a Democrat in New York’s 12th Congressional District, which covers much of Manhattan. While he has not officially announced his candidacy, the filing signals potential entry into a growing Democratic primary to replace retiring Rep. Jerry Nadler. Conway’s team declined to comment on his intentions.

If he joins the race, Conway would become one of several high-profile contenders vying for the seat. Among those already running are Jack Schlossberg, the grandson of former president John F. Kennedy, and Micah Lasher, a New York state legislator and former aide to Nadler.

Conway initially supported Trump early in his presidency and was married at the time to Kellyanne Conway, a senior White House adviser and prominent defender of the former president. Over time, George Conway became one of Trump’s most relentless critics, sharply attacking the president’s conduct on social media and television.

He later co-founded the anti-Trump Lincoln Project, a political group aimed at opposing Trump and his allies. George and Kellyanne Conway announced their divorce in early 2023.

New York’s 12th District runs from Union Square up to the northern edge of Central Park and includes affluent neighborhoods such as the Upper East Side and Upper West Side, making it one of the most influential Democratic strongholds in the country.
