Are you at risk of arthritis? It doesn’t just affect seniors

Under 65 and feeling aches and pains? Don’t dismiss it — you could have arthritis.
“While most people think arthritis just impacts seniors, the reality is that more than half of Canadians
with osteoarthritis are under 65, and a third are actually diagnosed before they turn 45,” says Trish
Barbato, president and CEO of Arthritis Society Canada.
Osteoarthritis is a progressive disease that leads to the breakdown of joint cartilage and the underlying
bone and is a result of the body’s failed attempt to repair damaged joint tissues. It’s the most common
form of arthritis.

It’s important to recognize early signs of the disease, because if arthritis does strike, it can have a
dramatic impact on your life, bringing pain, fatigue and restricted mobility.
Here are four symptoms to watch for:

 occasional and intermittent aches and pains
 morning stiffness lasting less than 30 minutes
 reduced range of movement
 creaking and/or swelling in your joints

If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, it’s time to talk to your healthcare professional. They’ll
help you get the treatment you need so you can live the life you want.
