Indian wushu athletes Aryan and Roshibina Devi advanced to the quarterfinals of their respective sanda events at the 2026 Asian Games on Monday, putting both competitors one victory away from securing a medal.
Aryan defeated Afghanistan’s Safi Shahzada 2-0 in the men’s 56kg round of 16 at the Aichi Prefectural Martial Arts Hall. He will now compete in Tuesday’s quarterfinals, with a victory guaranteeing him a place in the semifinals and a medal.
Roshibina Devi also booked her place in the last eight after defeating Bangladesh’s Shika Khatun by point difference in the women’s 60kg round of 16. The Indian is seeking a third consecutive Asian Games medal after winning silver in Hangzhou in 2023 and bronze at the 2018 Jakarta Games.
Roshibina also won gold at the 2019 South Asian Games in Kathmandu-Pokhara and earned bronze at the 2016 World Junior Championships. Her quarterfinal on Tuesday gives her an opportunity to add another Asian Games medal to her record.
In the taolu events, India’s Nyeman Wangsu finished 15th in the women’s changquan final on Monday. Suraj Singh Mayanglambam had earlier finished 11th in the men’s changquan competition on Sunday.
Aryan and Roshibina will return to action Tuesday, when both will compete for semifinal berths and guaranteed medals for India.
