Biden praises Trudeau as a friend, credits him for strengthening U.S.-Canada alliance and global impact after his resignation

Jan 7th: U.S. President Joe Biden expressed his admiration for Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau following his unexpected resignation announcement on Monday. Biden highlighted their close partnership over the years, calling Trudeau a friend and commending his contributions to strengthening the U.S.-Canada alliance.

“Prime Minister Trudeau has been a steadfast ally, a committed leader, and a good friend,” Biden said in a statement on Tuesday morning. “The United States has no better ally, closer partner, or steadier friend than Canada, and the same can be said of Trudeau.”

Biden recalled that Trudeau was the first world leader he spoke with after taking office in 2021. Over the years, the two leaders collaborated on major challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic, climate change, and combating the fentanyl crisis. They also worked together to support Ukraine against Russian aggression and made significant investments to strengthen North America’s supply chains and economies.

“Together, we’ve tackled some of the toughest issues our nations have faced in decades,” Biden said. “Thanks to his leadership, the U.S.-Canada alliance is stronger, and the world is better off.”

Trudeau’s resignation comes ahead of Canada’s general election later this year, at a time when his Liberal Party has been losing support in the polls. Meanwhile, President-elect Donald Trump has threatened a 25% tariff on Canadian imports if the country doesn’t enhance border security and crack down on fentanyl trafficking.

Biden concluded his remarks by praising Trudeau’s optimism and strategic vision. “The American and Canadian people are safer because of him, and I will always be grateful for his partnership and leadership,” Biden said.

Biden’s heartfelt statement underscores the deep bond between the two leaders and their shared efforts to address global and regional challenges.
