BJP Rules Out SAD Alliance And Says Party Will Contest All 117 Punjab Assembly Seats On Its Own In 2027

Dismissing mounting speculation over a potential reconciliation with the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), BJP National General Secretary (Organisation) B L Santhosh announced on Monday that the Bharatiya Janata Party will contest all 117 seats independently in the upcoming February 2027 Punjab Assembly elections.

Addressing a party zonal meeting in Patiala during a two-day tour to review organizational readiness across Punjab’s 23 districts, Santhosh declared that the state is ready for political change and that the BJP intends to form the next government on its own strength.

Rejection of Alliance Rumors

Santhosh’s statements come amid recent signals from senior SAD leadership suggesting a interest in reviving their long-standing partnership:

  • SAD Hints: Bathinda MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal and senior leader Bikram Singh Majithia recently voiced support for a renewed coalition, citing public sentiment.
  • Leadership Meetings: Rumors escalated after SAD chief Sukhbir Singh Badal met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on August 7.
  • BJP Counterposition: State BJP leaders, including Punjab unit president Kewal Singh Dhillon, reaffirmed that the party is prioritizing booth-level organization over coalition talks.

The SAD originally severed its decades-long alliance with the NDA in September 2020 during protests over repealed central farm laws. After contesting the 2022 state elections and 2024 parliamentary elections separately to poor outcomes for both parties, Santhosh’s firm stance confirms that Punjab is headed toward a multi-cornered contest involving the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), the Congress, the BJP, and the SAD.
