British Consulate in Toronto and Islamic Relief Canada co‑host community iftar highlighting UK–Canada commitment to global humanitarian aid

Toronto, February 26, 2026

The British Consulate General in Toronto and Islamic Relief Canada welcomed community members, partners, and faith leaders to a joint iftar reception on Thursday evening, 24 February, honouring the UK and Canada’s shared commitment to humanitarian assistance around the world.

Canada and the UK: global leaders in international development

Both Canada and the UK are significant longstanding contributors to international development and humanitarian relief, motivated by our collective understanding that a more stable world benefits us all.

Together, we work with charities to help the most vulnerable communities across the globe. Most recently, on the 1000th day of the devastating conflict in Sudan, UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper announced an additional £20 million ($37 million CAD) of support, meaning we have now provided more than £146 million ($270.6 million CAD) to support over 800,000 people since the start of 2026.

The UK-Canada partnership, including with trusted non-governmental organisations (NGOs) such as Islamic Relief Canada, is more vital than ever during turbulent times, with significantly rising humanitarian needs.

Fouzia Younis MBE, Consul General, British Consulate‑General Toronto said:

“Ramadan is an opportunity for us to reflect on our shared values of compassion, service, and solidarity. Canada and the UK are steadfast in our commitment to supporting vulnerable communities around the world and working with organisations like Islamic Relief Canada strengthen the impact of our humanitarian efforts. Islamic Relief was founded in my home city of Birmingham, so it was a proud moment for me personally to show how our countries stand together in service to those in need.”

Tufail Hussain, interim Chief Executive Officer, Islamic Relief Canada, said:

We were extremely grateful to join the British Consul General to Toronto, Ms. Fouzia Younis MBE, who graciously hosted an iftar bringing together partners and community members to celebrate the work of Islamic Relief Canada. We express our heartfelt gratitude for her ongoing support and for the British government’s recognition of our humanitarian efforts. Ramadan is a time of strengthening bonds and community, and we look forward to continuing meaningful discussions on how Canada and the UK can further amplify this crucial work.

A Night of Community and Reflection

The evening brought together diverse members of Toronto’s diplomatic, faith, business, political and nonprofit communities in the spirit of reflection and unity. Guests highlighted the importance of international cooperation at a time of increasing global humanitarian needs, and how international stability allows communities to prosper.
