Canada’s Inflation Hits 4.1%; May CPI Reaches Highest Level In 3 Years

U.S. inflation climbed to 4.2% in May, its highest annual rate since April 2023, triggering a broad market selloff as investors reacted to mounting concerns over rising prices and the outlook for interest rates.

According to the latest Consumer Price Index (CPI) data, inflation has accelerated for three consecutive months, with monthly price increases of at least 0.5%. The benchmark S&P 500 fell 1.6% following the release, reflecting investor concerns that persistent inflation could delay any easing of monetary policy.

The latest surge has been driven largely by soaring energy costs following disruptions to global oil supplies during the conflict involving Iran. Gasoline prices jumped 40.5% year-over-year, while fuel oil prices surged 58.9%, making energy the biggest contributor to the overall increase in consumer prices.

Excluding volatile food and energy prices, so-called core inflation stood at 2.9%, suggesting broader price pressures remain more moderate. Food prices rose 3.1% over the past year.

The figures highlight the cumulative impact of inflation over recent years. An item costing $100 in May 2021 now costs about $124.40, reflecting a 24.4% increase after several years of elevated inflation.

Market analysts say inflation could ease if tensions in the Middle East continue to subside and energy markets stabilize. A lasting agreement to keep the Strait of Hormuz open would likely reduce oil prices and ease pressure on consumers and businesses.

Despite the latest market volatility, many investment experts continue to caution against attempting to time the market. Historical market performance suggests long-term investors have generally fared better by remaining invested through periods of high inflation and geopolitical uncertainty rather than reacting to short-term market swings.
