Canada’s Inflation Rises To 2.4% In March Amid Energy Price Surge

The Ontario government is moving to sell a $28.9 million private jet purchased for Premier Doug Ford’s use, just days after the acquisition sparked widespread public and political backlash.

Premier Doug Ford said the province will work with Bombardier and other partners to offload the aircraft “as quickly as possible,” acknowledging that “now is not the right time” for such an expense amid rising cost-of-living pressures.

The Bombardier Challenger 650 jet had been purchased to facilitate the premier’s travel across Ontario, Canada, and the United States, including efforts to advocate against U.S. tariffs. However, the decision drew sharp criticism from opposition leaders and advocacy groups, who argued the funds could have been better spent on public services such as healthcare and education.

Opposition figures accused the government of being out of touch with everyday Ontarians, with some suggesting the reversal came only after intense public pressure. Critics also warned the province could incur financial losses in reselling the aircraft, potentially leaving taxpayers to absorb the cost.

Supporters of the decision to sell, including taxpayer advocacy groups, called the reversal a “win for taxpayers,” emphasizing concerns over Ontario’s growing debt and spending priorities.

The controversy highlights ongoing tensions around government spending as many Canadians continue to face high costs for essentials like groceries and fuel.
