Canadian Musician Jacob Hoggard Seeks Bail While Appealing Sexual Assault Conviction To Supreme Court

Sept 10: An Ontario Appeal Court justice has reserved her decision on whether Canadian musician Jacob Hoggard should be granted bail as he seeks to challenge his sexual assault conviction at the Supreme Court of Canada.

Justice Jill Copeland reviewed arguments during a bail hearing for Hoggard earlier today. This hearing comes several weeks after the Hedley frontman began serving his five-year sentence for sexual assault causing bodily harm, a conviction he received in June 2022.

Initially, Hoggard was granted bail immediately after his sentencing to allow him to appeal the decision to the Court of Appeal for Ontario. However, the three-judge panel at that court upheld his conviction last month, leading to Hoggard’s subsequent surrender into custody.

Recently, Hoggard has applied for leave to appeal his case to Canada’s highest court. His application argues that the three-judge panel made errors in its ruling and highlights the presence of significant questions of “national and public importance” in the case.
