Prime Minister Mark Carney is expected to announce his choice for Canada’s next Supreme Court justice in the coming weeks, with a decision anticipated before the end of June.
According to multiple sources familiar with the process, two leading candidates remain under consideration: Glenn Joyal and Anna Loparco. Carney is expected to present his preferred nominee to cabinet before making a formal announcement.
The appointment will fill a vacancy on the Supreme Court of Canada, one of the country’s most influential institutions, responsible for ruling on major constitutional, legal, and public policy issues.
The selection process has drawn significant attention within legal and political circles, as the successful candidate will help shape the court’s direction on key national issues for years to come.
While the Prime Minister’s Office has not publicly confirmed the finalists, sources indicate that the decision is imminent. The appointment is expected to be finalized before Parliament’s summer recess.
The new justice will join the nine-member Supreme Court, which serves as Canada’s highest court of appeal and plays a critical role in interpreting the Constitution and federal laws.
