Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled for a highly anticipated state visit to Canada on December 11 and 12, 2026. Prime Minister Carney confirmed the visit will take place in Toronto and Ottawa.
The Indian Prime Minister’s Canadian itinerary includes high-level diplomatic engagements with government officials in Ottawa before he moves on to Toronto for the community gala. The Indian diaspora in Canada—which encompasses roughly 3 million individuals—has heavily anticipated a formal community address of this scale for over a decade. The Indian Prime Minister is set to meet key community leaders and make a public address at Rogers Centre in Toronto.
The visit comes as the latest milestone in the strengthening of Canada-India ties, which recently experienced a major reset following a long period of tension. With the election of Prime Minister Mark Carney, those ties experienced a quick rebound, which paved the way for economic relations and state visits.
On October 30th, 2026, India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met with Canada’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Anita Anand, on the sidelines of the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Atlanta, Georgia. A message from the ministers suggested that this meeting will serve as a crucial “building block” to scale up the renewed partnership.
Prime Minister Carney recently conducted a landmark state visit to India in March 2026, along with a delegation including Federal ministers and Premiers, where the two leaders forged economic partnerships and deep-reaching ties. In response to Y Media Group’s reporter’s question on whether PM Modi would visit Canada, Carney later added that an invitation had been extended by him, though at that time no date had been settled on.
Following Carney’s landmark visit to India in March 2026, Canada’s Foreign Minister Anand also travelled to New Delhi in mid-October to meet with PM Modi directly, setting the baseline for the bilateral reset.
The diplomatic reset has translated into ambitious economic targets aimed at finalizing a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) by the end of 2026. Key economic outcomes include an aggressive bilateral trade target of USD $50 billion by 2030.
A historic trade mission also took place, with Canada sending its largest trade delegation to India in over 30 years to fast-track commercial ties across technology, agriculture, and energy sectors.
The primary event planned for Canada, marketed under the banner “Canada Welcomes Modi,” is scheduled for December 11 in Toronto, where organizers expect an audience of nearly 30,000 members of the Indian diaspora.
According to Indian High Commissioner Dinesh K. Patnaik and local community organizers, a diverse coalition of groups spanning different regions and beliefs have been actively registering and planning for the reception.
The updated economic roadmap is anchored by a significant USD $1.8 billion uranium supply deal alongside shared clean energy initiatives. Following his stop in Canada, he is scheduled to fly to Miami to participate in the G20 Leaders’ Summit.
