Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre named Canadian Press Newsmaker of the Year for second consecutive year

16th December 2024: For the second year straight, Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre has been named The Canadian Press Newsmaker of the Year, cementing his status as a dominant force in Canadian politics.

Editors across the country selected Poilievre as the top newsmaker for 2024, with over a quarter of votes going his way. His sharp criticisms of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and focus on the concerns of everyday Canadians, like the cost of living and housing, have resonated widely. Wendy Cox of The Globe and Mail described him as a politician who has tapped into the current mood of the nation, even as questions remain about his potential as a future prime minister.

Throughout 2024, Poilievre surged ahead in polls, positioning himself as Canada’s “prime minister-in-waiting.” His straightforward messaging and relentless attacks on Trudeau’s leadership kept him in the spotlight. From calling out the government’s handling of inflation to challenging the Liberals on their carbon-pricing policies, Poilievre dominated the conversation in Ottawa.

The year was marked by key victories for the Conservatives under his leadership. They shattered fundraising records and even flipped high-profile Liberal strongholds, such as Toronto—St. Paul’s in a byelection and LaSalle—Emard—Verdun in Montreal. Meanwhile, Poilievre’s ability to stall Liberal legislation in the House of Commons further showcased his strategic approach to opposition.

Known for his sharp tongue, Poilievre also made headlines for his bold tactics in Parliament. In April, he was removed from the House after refusing to retract his comment calling Trudeau a “wacko prime minister.” His fiery remarks and unwavering stance kept pressure on the government, challenging them to call an election and daring opposition parties to do the same.

With his growing popularity and ability to steer the national conversation, Poilievre has solidified his place as a major player in Canada’s political landscape.
