20 September: During Thursday’s question period, tensions escalated between Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre and NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh. The confrontation began after Poilievre criticized the NDP and Bloc Québécois for their refusal to support a Conservative non-confidence motion aimed at toppling the Liberal government. Poilievre went on to accuse Singh of abandoning his governing agreement with the Liberals after securing his MP pension.
As Poilievre’s comments intensified, calling Singh a “fake” and a “sell-out,” Singh stood up, visibly angered, and shouted at Poilievre. Singh walked into the aisle and reportedly said, “I’m right here, bro,” prompting further crosstalk between the two parties. Poilievre was seen gesturing and challenging Singh to “do it,” adding to the heated exchange.
House Speaker Greg Fergus stepped in to restore order, reminding MPs that Canadians are watching and urging them to conduct themselves with decorum. He also emphasized that questions in question period are supposed to be directed toward the government, highlighting that Poilievre had initially targeted the Bloc and NDP instead.
The non-confidence vote is expected to take place next week, with neither the Bloc nor NDP backing the motion, making an early election unlikely.
