Ford Expands SUV Recall in Canada Over Fire Risk from Fuel Injector Defect

Ford has broadened its recall in Canada to include additional SUVs due to a serious safety concern that could lead to engine fires.

Transport Canada issued an updated advisory warning that a defective fuel injector could crack and leak fuel into the engine compartment, increasing the risk of fire. The newly added 2024 Ford Bronco joins previously recalled models, bringing the total number of affected vehicles to 70,618 — all equipped with 1.5-litre EcoBoost engines.

Ford will notify owners by mail. As an interim fix, dealerships will update the engine control software to help detect fuel leaks. A permanent solution is still in development.

The recall now covers:

  • Bronco Sport models (2021–2024)
  • Escape models (2020–2022)

In the U.S., a similar recall affects over 694,000 vehicles after a year-long investigation. Drivers are urged to watch for signs such as fuel odour, dashboard alerts, smoke, or flames.

Ford has issued multiple related recalls this year in Canada, including one in March for 3,241 vehicles with fire risks and another in July impacting over 107,000 vehicles due to a fuel pump defect that could lead to crashes.
