In an unprecedented display of cross-party unity, former Alberta premiers Jason Kenney and Rachel Notley have partnered to co-chair a national business campaign aimed at keeping the province in Canada. The initiative, organized by the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, seeks to highlight the economic risks of Alberta separation ahead of an upcoming provincial referendum.
The campaign comes as Albertans prepare to vote on October 19 on whether to remain part of Canada or proceed to a second, binding vote on independence. Kenney, a United Conservative Party premier who defeated Notley’s NDP government in 2019, has spent much of the summer condemning the separatist push. He warned that independence efforts undermine legitimate negotiations over provincial grievances with the federal government.
Notley similarly criticized the referendum initiative, holding Premier Danielle Smith’s UCP administration responsible for pushing what she termed a separatist agenda. While acknowledging their fundamental political differences, Notley stressed that both leaders agree the referendum poses severe harm to Alberta’s business environment, particularly during ongoing trade tensions with the United States.
Candace Laing, president of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, emphasized that shifting geopolitical and economic conditions make greater domestic cooperation essential. Although specific campaign details remain in development, the Chamber confirmed the initiative will focus on demonstrating that Alberta’s long-term prosperity is best served as part of a united Canada.
