Y Media Newsroom: Former Liberal MP and Canadian ambassador John McCallum passes away at 75

22 June: Former federal cabinet minister and longtime Ontario Member of Parliament John McCallum has passed away at the age of 75, his family confirmed in a statement shared on social media Sunday.

“With heavy hearts, we share the passing of The Honourable John McCallum,” the statement read, noting that he died peacefully on June 21, 2025, surrounded by his family.

McCallum had a distinguished political and diplomatic career, serving as the MP for the Markham area from 2000 until 2015. During his tenure, he held several senior cabinet positions under Liberal governments, including Minister of Immigration, Minister of National Defence, and Minister of National Revenue.

He also represented Canada abroad, notably serving as ambassador to China from 2017 to 2019.

Tributes poured in from across the political spectrum as leaders reflected on his legacy. Prime Minister Mark Carney described McCallum as “an inspiration, a mentor, and a friend,” highlighting his contributions to public service, diplomacy, and economic policy. “He always served Canada with good humour and grace,” Carney added in his tribute.

Former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also shared his condolences, writing, “He helped this country navigate some of its most challenging times. I’m saddened to learn of the passing of my friend John McCallum.”

Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand expressed deep sorrow, calling McCallum her mentor and a guiding force in her political journey. “From the moment I decided to run for office in 2019, John was by my side — always with a smile, endless enthusiasm, and thoughtful advice … I will miss him greatly.”

Former Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Andrew Furey also paid tribute, describing McCallum as “a good friend and someone I leaned on often for advice,” and remembered him as “thoughtful, kind, and always generous with his time.”
