G7 Leaders Hold “Frank” Talks On U.S.-Iran Deal As 14-point Agreement Faces Scrutiny

A preliminary U.S.-Iran agreement aimed at ending hostilities in West Asia dominated discussions among G7 leaders during a dinner meeting on the opening day of the G7 Summit in Évian, France, with leaders engaging in what officials described as a “frank” and detailed exchange on the proposed framework.

Hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron, the nearly two-hour dinner overlooking Lake Geneva brought together leaders of the world’s largest advanced economies to discuss the rapidly evolving situation in the Middle East, alongside the ongoing war in Ukraine.

According to reports, the U.S.-Iran framework emerged as the central topic of discussion following President Donald Trump’s announcement that a peace agreement had been completed and signed virtually on Sunday. While the full text of the deal has yet to be released publicly, leaders sought clarity on its implementation and broader implications for regional stability.

European officials reportedly left the discussions with several unanswered questions, particularly regarding the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important energy shipping routes. The strategic waterway, through which roughly one-fifth of global oil supplies normally pass, has been heavily disrupted during the conflict.

Questions remain over the timeline for restoring full maritime traffic, with U.S. officials offering differing assessments in recent days. Ahead of the summit, Washington indicated that European countries could play a role in mine-clearing operations to secure safe passage through the strait.

Speaking before the dinner during a bilateral meeting with President Macron, Trump expressed confidence that maritime operations would soon return to normal.

“I am very happy to say the deal’s all signed and the strait is already partially opened,” Trump said. “Ships are starting to go out now. On Friday, it will be completely opened.”

The U.S. president added that mine-removal efforts were already underway and described relations with Iran during negotiations as constructive.

Trump has promoted the agreement as a historic diplomatic breakthrough that could reshape the security landscape of the region. In a post on Truth Social, he said the deal would bring “Peace and Security” to the Middle East and restore energy flows critical to the global economy.

The reopening of the Strait of Hormuz is widely viewed as one of the most significant components of the agreement, given its impact on global oil markets. Energy prices surged during the 100-day conflict as shipping through the corridor was disrupted, raising concerns about global supply chains and economic stability.

Beyond the Middle East, G7 leaders also discussed Ukraine and broader geopolitical challenges facing the international community. However, the Iran agreement remained the dominant topic throughout the evening as leaders weighed its potential consequences for regional security, energy markets, and international diplomacy.

With details of the agreement still emerging and negotiations on key issues expected to continue, the framework is likely to remain a major focus of international discussions throughout the remainder of the G7 Summit.
