Guterres Welcomes Positive Steps in India-China Border Talks

18th December 2024: UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has praised the recent agreement between India and China to improve their relations and address border issues. His spokesperson, Stephane Dujarric, highlighted the importance of resolving international disputes through bilateral diplomacy, calling it a significant achievement.

India’s National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi met in Beijing on Monday for the 23rd Special Representatives’ meeting. This high-level consultation resumed after a five-year break due to the 2020 border tensions.

Following the meeting, India’s Ministry of External Affairs emphasized the importance of stable and friendly India-China relations for regional and global peace. Both sides agreed to restart cross-border cooperation, including the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, data sharing on trans-border rivers, and border trade.

This progress comes after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping reached an understanding during their meeting in Kazan in October.

Dujarric noted that while unresolved disputes often grab headlines, many international issues are resolved through bilateral or UN-mediated efforts, which deserve recognition.

This meeting marks a positive step toward easing tensions and fostering cooperation between the two neighbors.
