India’s Ram Temple Project Rocked By Alleged Corruption Scandal

Allegations of financial mismanagement and embezzlement at Ayodhya’s Ram Temple have triggered political controversy in India, placing one of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) most significant religious and political symbols under intense scrutiny ahead of next year’s Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections.

The Ram Temple, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in January 2024, has become one of India’s most visited religious sites. Managed by the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust, the temple has received millions of dollars in donations from devotees since its opening.

The controversy erupted after a former supervisor of the trust’s accounting team publicly alleged financial irregularities involving temple donations. Following mounting public pressure, the Uttar Pradesh government established a three-member investigation committee. Police have since registered a criminal case and arrested at least eight individuals connected to the counting of cash and valuables donated to the temple.

The allegations have prompted further complaints from devotees seeking information about valuable offerings, including gold jewellery, silver bricks and other donations entrusted to the temple. Amid the growing scandal, the trust’s longtime general secretary, Champat Rai, stepped down along with several other senior trustees.

The issue has sparked outrage among many Hindu devotees, including supporters of the Ram Temple movement, who say the alleged misuse of donations has betrayed the faith of millions. Critics argue that authorities are focusing on lower-level employees while failing to hold senior officials accountable. Opposition leaders have also demanded greater transparency in the investigation.

Political analysts say the controversy could become a major issue in Uttar Pradesh’s upcoming assembly elections. The Ram Temple has been a cornerstone of the BJP’s political messaging for decades, and allegations of corruption involving its management risk undermining one of the party’s most powerful electoral symbols.

The controversy also revives earlier criticism of the temple trust. In 2021, it faced allegations over the purchase of land at inflated prices using public donations, though the trust denied wrongdoing. The BJP has not publicly commented on the latest allegations.

As investigations continue, the outcome is expected to have implications not only for the management of one of Hinduism’s holiest sites but also for the political landscape in India’s most populous state ahead of a closely watched election.
