Krishna Janmashtami and Nand Utsav were celebrated with immense devotion, joy and grandeur at the residence of Rashi and Naval Bajaj in Brampton, continuing a cherished tradition that the Bajaj family has proudly hosted for more than two decades and in Canada for over a decade and a half.
This year’s celebration carried a particularly meaningful message inspired by the timeless teachings of Lord Krishna — love, warmth, passion and confidence. The entire venue was beautifully decorated in different shades of sky blue and pink, symbolizing love, warmth, passion and positive confidence, creating a divine and welcoming atmosphere for thousands of guests.
Krishna Janmashtami, also known as Janmashtami or Gokulashtami, celebrates the birth of Lord Krishna, revered as the eighth avatar of Lord Vishnu. The festival is observed on the eighth day, or Ashtami, of the dark fortnight of the Hindu lunar calendar and holds special significance among Vaishnava traditions.
According to Hindu tradition, Lord Krishna was born in Mathura at a time of immense turmoil, oppression and injustice under the rule of King Kansa. Following his birth, his father Vasudeva carried the infant Krishna across the Yamuna River to Gokul, where he was raised by Nanda and Yashoda.
The story of Lord Krishna continues to inspire generations through its powerful message that Dharma ultimately triumphs over evil. His teachings encourage humanity to follow the path of righteousness, courage, compassion, wisdom and peace. His message, particularly through the Bhagavad Gita, remains deeply relevant in modern life.
For the Bajaj family, the essence of Janmashtami is not simply a celebration of a religious festival, but an opportunity to bring people together, strengthen bonds and share the universal values of love, unity, warmth, passion, confidence and happiness.
The evening featured a spectacular combination of devotional and cultural performances, including dance-drama presentations depicting episodes from the life of Lord Krishna, devotional singing, Ras, Garba and musical performances. Guests were treated to performances by renowned classical singer Hemant Panwar, Vaishnavi Panwar, Vedansh Panwar and team, along with Ajay Tyagi, Manoj Ji and team.
One of Canada’s leading Garba singers, Sachin Joshi, also entertained the audience with his melodious voice. Sachin Joshi and his team handled the evening’s sound and music arrangements, while he performed a number of popular Garba selections as well as beautiful devotional songs.
A particularly beautiful tradition at the celebration was the drawing of tiny Krishna footprints leading from outside the home toward the interior. The footprints symbolize Lord Krishna’s arrival and journey into the home, welcoming the divine presence into the family.
The offerings prepared for Lord Krishna reflected the family’s extraordinary devotion and attention to detail. More than 256 varieties of sweets, 101 varieties of fruits and 31 varieties of dry fruits were prepared and offered as part of the celebrations. Following the festivities, the sweets and offerings were distributed among guests as Prasad.
Children also enthusiastically participated in the celebrations, with many dressed as Lord Krishna and other beloved characters associated with Krishna’s childhood stories, adding innocence, colour and charm to the festivities.
The celebration attracted thousands of people and welcomed guests from across Canada as well as from around the world, including the United Kingdom, India, Australia and the United States. Over the years, the event has evolved into a signature Janmashtami celebration in Brampton, with guests eagerly looking forward to attending each year.
The event was graced by several prominent dignitaries and community leaders, including Hon. Prabmeet Singh Sarkaria, Minister of Transportation; MPP Amarjot Sandhu; Mayor of Brampton Patrick Brown; Brampton City Councillor Rod Power; Vice Consul of India Yadu Ram Ji, along with heads of community organizations, religious institutions, community leaders and members of the media.
Speaking on the occasion, Mayor Patrick Brown extended his warm wishes on Janmashtami and highlighted Brampton’s position as one of Canada’s most diverse cities. He applauded the way different communities and traditions contribute to making Brampton culturally and religiously vibrant. He also thanked Rashi Bajaj and the Bajaj family for hosting the celebration year after year and for adding to the cultural richness of Brampton.
Hon. Prabmeet Singh Sarkaria also extended his best wishes on the auspicious occasion and thanked the Bajaj family for continuing the tradition of celebrating Janmashtami every year. He acknowledged the dedication involved in bringing the community together and shared his appreciation for the celebration.
Other dignitaries and guests similarly conveyed their warm wishes to the Bajaj family and expressed appreciation for organizing such a meaningful and vibrant celebration.
The gathering was warmly welcomed by Rashi and Saisha Bajaj. Speaking to the guests, Rashi emphasized the importance of living a spiritual yet joyful life — one that is free from unnecessary stress and filled with happiness, positivity and purpose. She particularly highlighted the importance of spirituality for today’s youth and encouraged young people to follow a path that brings inner peace, confidence and genuine happiness.
