Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has reportedly apologised to the Government of India over the spread of deepfake content, child sexual abuse material (CSAM) and shortcomings in the company’s content moderation systems.
According to sources, Meta acknowledged failures in the way harmful content was handled on its platforms and admitted that significant amounts of money had been spent promoting certain types of content.
Sources also said the Indian government informed Meta that the company cannot claim protection solely as an intermediary, arguing that its algorithms actively determine which content is distributed to users.
During the discussions, Meta reportedly expressed regret over its handling of the issues, apologised for the mistakes and acknowledged concerns raised by the government regarding the circulation of deepfake videos and child sexual abuse content.
The reported exchange comes as governments around the world increase scrutiny of major technology platforms over content moderation, algorithmic accountability and online safety.
