July 22: Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly asserted Canada’s firm stance on Beijing’s interference in Canadian affairs and its human rights record during a recent meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Beijing. The discussions, aimed at reopening dialogue after six years, covered various issues including China’s actions in Hong Kong, treatment of Uyghurs and Tibetans, and military threats to Taiwan. Joly emphasized Canada’s zero tolerance for interference and stressed the need for confidence-building measures to address bilateral and global concerns, despite significant differences on major issues.
