“No Country Can Hold Us Hostage” — Carney Pushes For A Stronger, More Independent Canada

Prime Minister Mark Carney says Canada’s response to the escalating trade conflict with the United States must go beyond simply weathering the current crisis.

Carney says his “Canada Strong” strategy is designed to make the country stronger, more resilient and less dependent on the United States, while expanding Canada’s economic relationships around the world.

His message: Canada must have the ability to determine its own economic and political future without being overly dependent on any single country.

“It’s about ensuring that no country can hold us hostage. And that we can live how we want to live,” Carney said.

The comments come as Canada and the United States exchange increasingly aggressive trade measures, with Washington imposing new tariffs and import restrictions and Ottawa responding with retaliatory duties.

For Carney, the broader objective is clear: build a Canada capable of standing on its own terms.
