Ontario Invests $475,900 To Expand Cancer Support Programs, Across Across Brampton

Ontario Trillium Foundation grant will help Wellspring Chinguacousy bring no-cost exercise and movement programs closer to families affected by cancer

The Ontario government is investing $475,900 through the Ontario Trillium Foundation’s Grow grant program to help Wellspring Chinguacousy Cancer Support Centre expand important cancer support services into community locations across Brampton.

MPP Hardeep Singh Grewal joined the Wellspring Chinguacousy team at Century Gardens Recreation Centre to announce the investment. For 18 years, the organization has served Brampton, Peel Region and surrounding communities with no-cost programs addressing the physical, emotional, practical and social challenges associated with cancer. Its services include exercise and movement, peer and group support, educational workshops, emotional wellness programming, and support for caregivers and family members.

“A cancer diagnosis can bring significant challenges for individuals and their families, and organizations like Wellspring Chinguacousy play an important role in helping people navigate that journey,” said Hardeep Singh Grewal, MPP for Brampton East. “This investment will allow their team to expand these specialized programs, reach more people across our community and continue making a meaningful difference in the lives of those affected by cancer.”

The three-year Grow grant will support Wellspring’s first expansion of these programs into community-based locations. Cancer Exercise is being delivered at Century Gardens Recreation Centre, while Tai Chi and Yoga are being offered through the Movement Programs at Cyril Clark Library Branch. This approach is intended to make participation more convenient and extend Wellspring’s reach to more people across Brampton and Peel.

“Wellspring Chinguacousy provides invaluable support to cancer patients and their families as they navigate the physical, emotional and practical challenges of a cancer diagnosis. This important investment will help bring Wellspring’s no-cost programming to more recreation centres across Brampton, making trusted support and wellness services more accessible and closer to home. We are grateful to the Ontario government and the Ontario Trillium Foundation for helping Wellspring reach more families in our community.” said Mayor Patrick Brown, City of Brampton.

“This expansion represents an exciting new chapter for Wellspring Chinguacousy,” said Rebecca Harrison, Executive Director of the Wellspring Chinguacousy Cancer Support Center. “We provide services to about 600 families annually, and this expansion will enable us to reach more cancer patients and enhance access to our programs. By extending our Cancer Exercise and Movement Programs outside of our center and into community sites, we’re creating new avenues for those affected by cancer to connect with support closer to home. We are grateful to the Ontario government and the Ontario Trillium Foundation for supporting us in this next phase of our work.”

As a registered charity, Wellspring Chinguacousy provides its programs at no cost and relies on donations and sponsorships to sustain its work. The organization does not receive core government funding.
