Ottawa Approves Enbridge’s $4b Sunrise Pipeline Expansion In B.C.

Ottawa has approved a major natural gas infrastructure project led by Enbridge Inc., aimed at expanding its Westcoast pipeline system in British Columbia. Federal Natural Resources Minister Tim Hodgson confirmed the green light for the $4-billion Sunrise project.

The expansion will include the construction of approximately 139 kilometres of new pipeline through 11 looping segments running alongside the existing network. Once completed, the project is expected to boost transportation capacity by up to 300 million cubic feet per day across one of B.C.’s primary natural gas transmission systems.

Officials say the added capacity will help meet rising demand, particularly as liquefied natural gas export facilities such as Woodfibre LNG begin operations. Construction on the project is anticipated to start this summer.
