PM Trudeau and premiers discuss united response to U.S. tariffs, Alberta opposes energy export restrictions

16th Jan: Canadian leaders are vowing to defend the country’s economy as the US considers imposing 25% tariffs on Canadian goods. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, speaking after a meeting with provincial and territorial premiers, emphasized that “nothing is off the table” in Canada’s response to the potential levies.

The proposed tariffs, which could take effect soon, are part of President-elect Donald Trump’s efforts to address illegal immigration and drug smuggling into the US. Trudeau assured that Canada would stand up for its citizens and support industries affected by the measures, which economists warn could severely impact Canada, where 75% of exports go to the US.

Canada is considering various countermeasures, including retaliatory tariffs and targeted energy policies. Trudeau also highlighted a $1.3 billion investment in border security to address US concerns.

However, divisions emerged among Canadian leaders regarding the use of energy exports as leverage. Alberta Premier Danielle Smith refused to sign a joint statement from the meeting, stating Alberta would not agree to energy export restrictions. Trudeau and other premiers, including those from Ontario, Quebec, and Newfoundland, remained open to using energy as a bargaining chip.

Canada is a major supplier of crude oil, natural gas, and electricity to the US, and some leaders see energy as a strategic advantage. Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Andrew Furey compared it to a chess game, saying Canada must carefully decide how to use its “queen.”

Despite differing views, Trudeau stressed unity in responding to the US tariff threat and reiterated that Canada would act decisively to protect its economy.
