Premier Doug Ford criticizes Trump’s tariff threats, rejects ‘Canada as 51st state’ idea

Jan 7th: Ontario Premier Doug Ford has rejected claims that Canada is causing economic problems in the United States, pointing instead to China for sending “cheap parts” through Mexico.

In a recent interview, Ford said he has spoken with many American leaders who have never blamed Canada for economic issues. Instead, he pointed to China for shipping inexpensive parts that are labeled “Made in Mexico” before being sent to the U.S. and Canada, which he says harms jobs in both countries.

Ford suggested the solution lies in a trade agreement between Canada and the U.S., rather than increasing tariffs.

His comments come after U.S. President-elect Donald Trump threatened to impose a 25% tariff on Canadian goods unless Canada takes steps to stop the flow of drugs and migrants at the border. Trump has also demanded that Canada meet NATO’s defense spending targets.

In addition to his tariff threats, Trump has made mocking comments about Canada, referring to it as “the 51st state” and calling Prime Minister Justin Trudeau “Governor Justin Trudeau.” Ford responded with humor, suggesting Canada could buy Alaska and a few U.S. states in response.

The remarks follow Trudeau’s announcement that he will step down as Prime Minister, adding to the tension in the ongoing trade discussions.
