Toronto police announce 10 arrests and 108 charges in major SIM swap fraud investigation, Project Disrupt

Toronto police have announced that 10 people are facing charges in a major SIM swap fraud case, known as Project Disrupt. The investigation, which began in June 2023, uncovered a scheme where suspects accessed victims’ cell phones and bank accounts through SIM swap fraud.

The suspects face a total of 108 charges, including fraud over $5,000, impersonation, intercepting private communications, and possessing identity information for fraudulent purposes.

Detective David Coffey explained that SIM swap fraud involves switching a victim’s SIM card by impersonating them at a cell phone store or using other methods to gain access. Once the fraudsters have access, they can intercept recovery emails or texts, compromising other accounts linked to the victim, such as online banking and social media.

Police reported that the suspects used convincing fake IDs to impersonate victims at cell phone stores and financial institutions. More than 400 pieces of fraudulent ID were seized during the investigation.

The investigation revealed that over 1,500 cellular accounts across Canada were compromised, with losses estimated to exceed $1 million.

Two suspects, Hervine Umutijima, 26, and Nadia Campitelli, 47, are still wanted by police.
