18th Dec 2024: U.S. president-elect Donald Trump has once again suggested that Canada should become the 51st state, calling it “a great idea.”
In a post early Wednesday morning on Truth Social, Trump questioned why the U.S. subsidizes Canada with over $100 million each year, stating, “Makes no sense!” He also pointed out that many Canadians might benefit from becoming part of the U.S., citing savings on taxes and military protection.
Later that afternoon, Jean Charest, former deputy prime minister and Quebec premier, responded, calling Trump’s comments a “wake-up call” for Canada. He expressed that all Canadians, regardless of political views, should be offended by Trump’s remarks. Charest emphasized that Canada needs to unite and strengthen its position on the world stage.
