Trump to Double Tariffs on Steel and Aluminum Imports; Canada Warns of Economic Fallout

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed Tuesday that President Donald Trump will sign an executive order to raise tariffs on imported steel and aluminum from 25% to 50%.

“Yes, the president will sign that executive order today. The tariffs on steel and aluminum will go up to 50%,” Leavitt said.

When questioned about the move amid calls for economic stability from U.S. leaders, Leavitt defended the decision, claiming that business leaders are eager to meet with Trump, recognizing him as the “negotiator in chief.”

The new tariffs are set to take effect on Wednesday.

Trump first announced the increase during a rally in Pittsburgh last Friday, stating his intention to double the levies on foreign steel and aluminum.

Canada, the largest supplier of these metals to the U.S., is expected to take a major hit. According to the United Steelworkers (USW), Canada exported $15.9 billion worth of aluminum to the U.S., and about 65% of Canadian steel is shipped south of the border.

Marty Warren, USW’s national director for Canada, warned of severe consequences for Canadian workers and businesses. “We’re on the verge of collapse in some areas,” Warren told CTV News. “At 50% tariffs, we can’t access the U.S. market.”

He added that while Canada’s retaliatory measures may help cushion the blow, if the tariffs remain in place for more than a few weeks, some Canadian steel producers may be forced to halt operations.

Warren urged governments and industries to prioritize Canadian-made products. “If we focus on supporting domestic goods, we have a better chance to stay afloat and emerge stronger,” he said.
