U.S., Iran Signal New Ceasefire Talks As Deadline Looms

The United States and Iran are signalling a fresh round of ceasefire negotiations in Pakistan as a fragile two-week truce nears its expiry, raising hopes for de-escalation even as both sides warn of potential renewed conflict.

Regional officials say top negotiators — including U.S. Vice President JD Vance and Iranian parliamentary speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf — are expected to arrive in Islamabad to lead the talks. However, neither Washington nor Tehran has officially confirmed the timing, with Iranian state media denying that any delegation has yet reached the Pakistani capital.

The ceasefire, which began on April 8, is set to expire imminently, intensifying diplomatic urgency. Despite the possibility of renewed dialogue, rhetoric remains sharply confrontational. U.S. President Donald Trump has warned of severe military consequences if an agreement is not reached, while Iranian leadership has insisted it will not negotiate under pressure and claims to have “new cards on the battlefield.”

Tensions have further escalated following U.S. military actions at sea. American forces recently boarded a санкctioned oil tanker linked to Iranian crude smuggling, part of a broader blockade targeting Iranian ports. Iran has condemned the move as an act of “piracy” and a violation of the ceasefire.

At the heart of the standoff is control over the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global shipping route through which roughly 20 per cent of the world’s oil and gas flows. Disruptions in the region have already driven oil prices sharply higher, with global markets reacting to fears of prolonged instability.

Pakistan, acting as a mediator, has tightened security across Islamabad in anticipation of high-level talks, deploying additional forces and increasing surveillance. Officials there remain cautiously optimistic that negotiations will proceed and potentially extend the ceasefire.

As diplomatic efforts intensify, the situation remains finely balanced between escalation and resolution, with global energy markets and regional stability hanging in the balance.
