Y Media Big Shot: Spain Claims Record 4th Euro Title with Late Victory Over England

July 14, Berlin, Germany: Substitute Mikel Oyarzabal struck an 87th-minute winner to give Spain a dramatic 2-1 victory over England in the Euro 2024 final at Berlin’s Olympiastadion, securing a record 4th European Championship crown.

The final, which came to life in the second half, appeared headed for extra time after England’s substitute Cole Palmer canceled out Nico Williams’ opening goal for Spain. However, Oyarzabal, another substitute, had the final word. The Real Sociedad forward was found just onside by a teasing Marc Cucurella cross and slotted the ball past England’s goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.

With this victory, Spain breaks a tie with Germany for the most Euro titles and signals the emergence of a fresh generation of talent led by 22-year-old Williams and 17-year-old Lamine Yamal, who became the youngest player ever to feature in a World Cup or European Championship final, surpassing the record set by Brazil legend Pele in 1958.

For England, the defeat was a cruel way to lose a second-straight European Championship final and extended the men’s team’s 58-year wait for a major trophy. The loss highlights their ongoing struggles in major tournaments despite the talent within the squad.

Spain’s win not only celebrates their rich football heritage but also showcases the promising future with young stars ready to uphold the nation’s legacy in international football.
