Over 150 donors walked through the doors of the newly opened Northpine Diagnostic Imaging Department at Scarborough General Hospital to get a firsthand look at how their donations are powering innovative advancements. This exclusive experience took place as part of Scarborough Health Network Foundation’s Annual Donor Reception on April 23, 2025, where attendees connected directly with the medical professionals who bring donor-supported innovations like the new 3T MRI to life.

The event also featured heartfelt remarks from two speakers who recounted personal stories highlighting the true importance of donor support.

Bonnie Salvador, daughter of long-time donor and dialysis patient Lynda Smith, spoke movingly about her parents’ experiences in both the former and newly built diagnostic imaging departments. She described the contrast in care settings and how donor investment has directly improved comfort, dignity, and access to vital medical services.

Julia Girmenia, a stage 4 cancer patient and ambassador for the Love, Scarborough campaign, reflected on the deep sense of community she has found at Scarborough General Hospital while undergoing treatment. Julia’s story highlights not only the high-quality care she receives from hospital staff but also the powerful human connections that define SHN.

The event not only celebrated the impact of current donor contributions but also looked ahead to the future, including the creation of the new Scarborough Health Centre of Excellence, which will support Scarborough’s first medical school.

SHN’s dedicated healthcare teams have done more than anyone thought possible with less than anyone could imagine. Now, thanks to the transformative power of community support, they can imagine what they can do with more.
