Carney emphasized the importance of strengthening Canadian media in the face of growing misinformation and foreign influence, particularly referencing recent criticisms of Canada by U.S. President Donald Trump. He described the move as essential to “securing Canada” by safeguarding its cultural identity.
The proposed plan includes expanding local coverage by adding more regional reporters and news bureaus across the country. It would also empower the CBC to take a leading role in countering false information while promoting Canadian heritage, with a specific focus on supporting Québec’s distinct cultural identity as a core part of Canada’s fabric.
Additionally, the Liberals aim to revise the CBC’s mandate to ensure it plays a crucial role in delivering accurate, life-saving information during national emergencies—further reinforcing its value as a trusted public resource.
