Canada’s newly elected Prime Minister, Mark Carney, officially introduced his 28-member cabinet at Rideau Hall, featuring a balanced team of seasoned political figures and fresh appointees. The team includes 14 men and 14 women, not counting Carney himself, continuing the gender parity precedent set by his predecessor.
Among the newcomers are former Vancouver mayor Gregor Robertson, Northwest Territories leader Rebecca Alty, Marjorie Michel—elected in former PM Justin Trudeau’s Papineau riding—and former Bank of Canada adviser and Goldman Sachs executive Tim Hodgson. Others joining the cabinet for the first time include ex-broadcaster Evan Solomon, Alberta MP Eleanor Olszewski, and engineer and École Polytechnique massacre survivor Nathalie Provost.
Several high-profile ministers from Trudeau’s administration are returning, including Chrystia Freeland, Dominic LeBlanc, Mélanie Joly, François-Philippe Champagne, Steven Guilbeault, and Steven MacKinnon. Despite past leadership rivalry, Freeland joins the new cabinet as Minister of Transport and Internal Trade, while LeBlanc will oversee Canada-U.S. trade, intergovernmental affairs, and the “One Canadian Economy” initiative—key parts of Carney’s strategy to improve cross-border and interprovincial economic ties.
Carney also reintroduced a two-tiered structure with a 10-member ministry of secretaries of state, aiming for a leaner and more agile government. This differs from Trudeau’s larger 39-member cabinet. Notably absent are several short-term ministers such as Arielle Kayabaga, Kody Blois, and Ali Ehsassi, along with Trudeau-era figures like Jonathan Wilkinson and Bill Blair, who confirmed they were stepping down from front-line roles.
Carney expressed confidence in his team, stating he is “ready to go” as he embarks on his mandate. The new cabinet is expected to focus on strengthening U.S. relations and increasing collaboration across party lines—key priorities as Parliament reconvenes later this month.
