While speaking on the campaign trail in Trois-Rivières, Quebec, Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre pledged to introduce stricter penalties for individuals who commit violence against intimate partners. His proposal outlines several major changes:

  • Introducing a new criminal charge specifically for “assault against an intimate partner”
  • Imposing the most restrictive bail conditions for those accused of such violence, including mandatory GPS ankle monitoring
  • Eliminating the option to reduce charges from murder to manslaughter in cases involving the killing of a partner

Poilievre criticized current policies, stating, “The government has let down Canada’s most vulnerable. Those who harm their partners or children should be removed from society and held behind bars where they can no longer pose a threat. A future Conservative government will ensure our justice system puts the rights of victims above those of offenders.”
