Carney To Announce Measures To Safeguard Jewish Communities

Prime Minister Mark Carney is expected to announce new federal measures aimed at addressing rising antisemitism and hate crimes in Canada during remarks in Toronto on Monday.

According to the Prime Minister’s Office, Carney will outline additional steps the government plans to take to combat anti-Jewish hatred and strengthen protections for Jewish communities across the country.

The announcement comes amid growing concerns about antisemitic incidents in Canada. Earlier this year, Toronto police investigated an incident in which three visibly Jewish individuals were allegedly targeted with an imitation firearm.

Advocacy organization B’nai Brith Canada reports that more than 6,800 antisemitic incidents were recorded nationwide in 2025, the highest annual total since it began tracking such incidents in 1982.

The rise in reported incidents has followed the escalation of conflict in the Middle East after the October 2023 attack by Hamas on Israel and the subsequent war in Gaza.

Noah Shack, interim president of the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs, said violence and hostility directed at Jewish Canadians have increased since the conflict began.

In a statement released Sunday, Shack called on Ottawa to strengthen community security measures and take stronger action against hate-motivated activity, radicalization, and the promotion of terrorism.

He said the prime minister has an opportunity to send a clear message that hatred, intimidation and violence against Jewish Canadians will not be tolerated and that the federal government will use all available tools to address the issue.

Further details on the government’s planned measures are expected during Carney’s announcement in Toronto later today.
