The International Cricket Council (ICC) has suspended the membership of Cricket Canada following what it described as “serious breaches” of the organization’s membership obligations.
The decision was announced after an ICC board meeting in Ahmedabad, India, and comes amid ongoing concerns over governance, financial management, and corruption allegations involving the Canadian cricket body.
Last month, the ICC had already frozen Cricket Canada’s funding and issued a six-month deadline for the organization to address governance deficiencies. An ICC letter cited inadequate governance structures and the failure to submit audited financial statements.
According to Cricket Canada’s 2024 financial report, the organization received more than $3.6 million from the ICC, accounting for approximately 63 per cent of its annual revenue.
The suspension follows a recent CBC fifth estate investigation that detailed allegations of corruption, financial mismanagement, and attempted match-fixing involving senior figures connected to Cricket Canada. Those named in the allegations have denied wrongdoing.
The investigation also revealed that Canada’s men’s national team captain, Dilpreet Bajwa, was being investigated by the ICC’s Anti-Corruption Unit over alleged match-fixing related to Canada’s T20 World Cup match against New Zealand in February. Bajwa did not respond to requests for comment at the time of the report.
Despite the suspension, Canada’s national cricket teams will continue to participate in ICC-sanctioned tournaments. However, funding for those programs will now be administered under direct ICC oversight.
Cricket Canada must satisfy a number of conditions, including reforms to its governance and administrative operations, before it can be considered for reinstatement by the ICC.
