Federal Investment of $688 Million in MDA Space to Strengthen Canada’s Security & Support Jobs in Brampton South and Ontario – Sonia Sidhu

The Government of Canada’s $688 million investment in MDA Space to build, test, and launch a replenishment satellite for the RADARSAT Constellation Mission (RCM), a project that will strengthen Canada’s sovereignty, enhance Arctic security, and support high-quality jobs in Brampton South.

Headquartered in Brampton South, MDA Space is one of Canada’s leading space technology companies and a key contributor to the country’s growing aerospace and defence industries. Through this contract, MDA Space will deliver a next-generation synthetic aperture radar satellite that will ensure Canada continues to have access to critical Earth observation data used for Arctic surveillance, emergency response, environmental monitoring, maritime safety, and national security.

The federal investment is expected to create and maintain up to 100 high-paying jobs while supporting a broad Canadian supply chain and advancing innovation developed right here in Canada.

“Brampton South continues to be at the forefront of innovation and Canada’s growing space economy. This $688 million investment in MDA Space demonstrates our government’s commitment to protecting Canada’s sovereignty, strengthening Arctic security, and supporting the highly skilled workers and innovators who call Brampton home,” said Sonia Sidhu, Member of Parliament for Brampton South.

The RADARSAT Constellation Mission provides critical information that governments, emergency responders, researchers, and industries rely on every day. Satellite data helps track floods and wildfires, monitor sea ice conditions in the Arctic, improve maritime safety, and support environmental stewardship across Canada. The replenishment satellite will ensure uninterrupted access to these essential services while enhancing Canada’s ability to monitor and protect its northern regions.

The project supports Canada’s Defence Industrial Strategy and contributes to strengthening sovereign Canadian capabilities in an increasingly complex global security environment. By leveraging Canadian technology and expertise, the investment reinforces Canada’s position as a global leader in space innovation while delivering economic benefits to communities such as Brampton.

“Our community can take pride in knowing that world-class technologies developed in Brampton South are helping keep Canadians safe, support emergency response efforts, and strengthen Canada’s leadership in space. This investment is a vote of confidence in Canadian talent, Canadian innovation, and the future of Brampton and Ontario.”
