Fifty Investigators Assigned To Probe Deadly CFB Wainwright Fire, Carney Says

Canada’s Chief of the Defence Staff, Gen. Jennie Carignan, has pledged to make public the findings of an investigation into a devastating brush fire at CFB Wainwright in Alberta that killed four Canadian Armed Forces members and injured 39 others. Speaking to the media on Monday, Carignan confirmed that three parallel investigations are underway, including military investigations and a civilian examination by Alberta authorities. A formal military board of inquiry will investigate the circumstances surrounding the tragedy, while the Canadian Forces fire marshal is conducting a separate review. The RCMP has also been asked to assist Alberta’s medical examiner.

The deadly fire occurred Saturday when a sudden shift in wind direction pushed an existing brush fire toward approximately 84 soldiers participating in military exercises at the Wainwright training range. The troops, members of C Company, 3rd Battalion, Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry, were preparing for deployment to Latvia and conducting grenade-throwing and small-unit combat training. The victims have been identified as Sgt. Morgan Wong, Pte. Shaun Farrell, Pte. Aidan Goulding and Pte. Hayden Lykkemark. Of the 39 soldiers injured, 19 were reported to be in critical condition. The tragedy prompted tributes in the House of Commons as military officials and Canadians mourned the loss of the four service members.

Carignan emphasized that the investigation would examine the circumstances surrounding the incident and that its conclusions would be shared publicly, although no timeline has been established for the board of inquiry. She explained that military exercises sometimes continue near brush fires to simulate realistic combat environments, but stressed that operational training must remain within established safety limits. The investigations are expected to examine the decisions and conditions that contributed to the disaster, with military leadership emphasizing the importance of accountability and preventing similar tragedies.
