Paris Police Impose Overnight Curfews In Two Districts Amid Fears Of Renewed Unrest

Paris authorities imposed an overnight curfew in two major districts following a weekend of violent protests, vandalism and widespread looting across France. The restrictions, introduced Monday, October 19, covered Place de la République, where demonstrators clashed with police, and the Les Halles shopping district, which experienced significant property damage and looting. Under the police order, individuals were prohibited from entering or remaining in these areas between 11 p.m. Monday and 6 a.m. Tuesday. Gatherings and demonstrations were also banned beginning at 8 p.m. Monday in an effort to prevent further unrest.

The measures followed nationwide demonstrations driven by public frustration over rising living costs and conditions in schools. While many protesters gathered to express economic and social grievances, some demonstrations escalated into confrontations with police, attacks on public buildings and the looting of commercial establishments. According to figures attributed to The Associated Press, approximately 3,000 businesses were damaged or looted across several French cities. Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu advocated targeted curfews in affected neighbourhoods rather than sweeping restrictions, emphasizing the need to restore public safety while limiting disruptions to everyday life.

French President Emmanuel Macron condemned the violence and pledged legal action against those responsible for vandalism and destruction. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez acknowledged shortcomings in authorities’ ability to anticipate the scale of the unrest, prompting questions about police preparedness and security measures. Officials have also considered additional restrictions in other affected cities as part of broader efforts to prevent further violence. The Paris curfew was limited to areas directly affected by the disturbances, with authorities seeking to protect businesses, public infrastructure and residents while restoring order.
