Omani Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi travelled to Tehran to hold high-level talks with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, following which the two diplomats issued a joint statement outlining a phased framework designed to establish a temporary joint maritime corridor through the Strait of Hormuz, along with a collaborative project to clear explosive mines from the strategic waterway.
The initiative comes after months of severely restricted commercial navigation following regional conflict, which drastically choked off the passage that historically carried roughly 20 percent of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas. Under the proposed phased framework, technical teams from both countries will work toward a practical arrangement for maritime traffic management, providing a structured basis to gradually safely resume the flow of commercial shipping through their shared coastal border.
Beyond immediate navigation measures, the diplomatic discussions addressed broader governance mechanisms for the waterway. Iranian officials noted that the negotiations aim to establish a permanent transit protocol within 30 to 60 days, focusing on information exchange, traffic oversight, and maritime security services. Additionally, Iranian representatives indicated that under the emerging understanding, military vessels could be excluded from the temporary transit corridor to mitigate the risk of armed escalation.
Both ministers emphasized that establishing stability in the Strait of Hormuz requires a broader regional consensus, signaling intentions to engage neighboring Persian Gulf nations in ongoing discussions. While technical talks between Muscat and Tehran continue, international observers view the proposed temporary corridor as a vital step toward reducing geopolitical friction and safeguarding global energy security amidst complex regional dynamics.
