New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani Opposes Planned Event For RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat At Madison Square

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has publicly voiced his opposition to an upcoming event at Madison Square Garden featuring Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat. Scheduled for August 29, the appearance is part of a broader centenary-year global outreach tour across the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom, and it is expected to draw roughly 5,000 attendees from the Indian diaspora.

During a press conference, Mamdani made clear his personal and political disapproval of the gathering while acknowledging the legal limitations of his office. Highlighting his background as the first Indian-American mayor of New York City, he noted that his family raised him with a vision of India as a pluralistic, secular republic where every person belongs. He expressed deep concern over the rise of movements rooted in exclusionary ideologies, stating his firm opposition both as an Indian-American and as the leader of a city committed to inclusivity.

Despite his strong stance, Mamdani indicated that New York City likely lacks the legal authority to intervene directly, stating that he was unsure if municipal jurisdiction allows for the cancellation of a privately booked event. Nevertheless, his comments align with growing pushback from a broad coalition of interfaith and civil rights groups—including Hindus for Human Rights, the Indian American Muslim Council, and the Interfaith Center of New York—who have actively petitioned the venue to revoke the reservation.

The mayor’s statement has drawn mixed responses across the political spectrum. Conservative commentators and political figures in India have criticized Mamdani for attempting to influence a private gathering, while several Indian opposition leaders and human rights advocates have publicly endorsed his remarks.
