Mayor Patrick Brown’s statement on today’s federal budget

“Today’s federal budget includes important commitments that align with Brampton’s goals: building more affordable homes, addressing homelessness, investing in recreation and keeping our community safe.

Investments in supportive and transitional housing, the renewal of the Emergency Treatment Fund and funding for community mental health and addictions facilities recognize that helping people find a home must include helping them stay housed. For Brampton and Peel, this is an opportunity to connect vulnerable residents with the housing and care they need. Ontario’s partnership will be essential to provide the ongoing operating funding, treatment services and staff needed for lasting results.

The proposed $1.5 billion for ice rinks and community recreation facilities is particularly welcome. These spaces help children learn new skills, keep seniors active and bring neighbours together. The budget’s recognition of the previously supported Embleton Community Centre demonstrates the value of investing in Brampton’s priorities.

Support for modernizing municipal permitting can help get homes built sooner. Those homes also need water, wastewater, roads, transit and community facilities, making reliable infrastructure funding essential.

Public safety remains a priority. The budget specifically recognizes FINTRAC’s engagement with law enforcement in Brampton as part of its work to counter extortion. We welcome coordinated action to disrupt the financial networks behind these crimes and protect residents and businesses.

I thank the federal government for these commitments and FCM for its continued advocacy. We now need clear timelines, accessible funding and strong coordination to turn national commitments into local results.

Brampton is ready to work with our federal and provincial partners and Peel Region to deliver more homes, stronger services and the infrastructure our residents deserve.”
