Monaco Manhunt Underway After Bomb Targets Ukrainian Oligarch

Authorities in Monaco and neighbouring France have launched a cross-border manhunt after an apparent targeted bombing left three people injured, including a Ukrainian-born businessman, in the principality on Monday evening.

Investigators believe the attack involved an explosive device concealed inside a parcel that detonated outside a residential building shortly after the victims arrived home. Monaco prosecutor Stéphane Thibault said the suspect fled the scene on foot and is believed to have crossed into France, where police are assisting in the search.

Sources familiar with the investigation identified the primary victim as Ukrainian-born businessman Vadym Yermolaiev. According to police sources, those injured also include his partner and his son.

The woman remains in critical condition after suffering severe injuries, while Yermolaiev’s condition has improved and is no longer considered life-threatening. His son sustained less serious injuries. All three remain hospitalized.

Prosecutors have opened an investigation into attempted murder. Officials say the suspect left the package outside the family’s ground-floor residence shortly before the explosion occurred.

Authorities have not officially confirmed the identities of the victims, noting they have yet to be formally interviewed. However, prosecutors said the male victim has lived in Monaco since at least 2021.

Yermolaiev, who obtained Cypriot citizenship in 2019, was sanctioned by Ukraine in 2023 over alleged business activities in Russian-occupied Crimea, according to Ukrainian media reports. The Ukrainian Embassy in Paris said it is verifying the identities and nationalities of those involved.

Monaco’s Prince Albert condemned the bombing, describing it as “an odious act” that has shocked the principality.

Monaco and French authorities are continuing their joint investigation as they work to identify and apprehend the suspect. The incident comes amid heightened scrutiny of attacks involving Ukrainian-linked figures across Europe following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
